  • Was single handedly responsible for the elevation of the Columbia University track program from the grave starting in 1935
  • Oversaw the completion of a new track, the addition of a cross country team to supplement the track and field team, and recruited talent that Columbia University track had never seen before
  • Assumed the role of Athletic Director from 1936-1942
  • Was also an assistant football coach
  • After building up his program and retiring to go work at a shipyard in World War II, Philbrook’s teams amassed a 74-22-1 record
  • Returned to the program in 1947 to pump life back into a program that had died down during the war years
  • Was single handedly responsible for the elevation of the Columbia University track program from the grave starting in 1935
